OUR "FLOWER SEED" INCIDENT!




Wednesday morning Maggie ate a sunflower seed, shell and all before going to school! When I picked her up at 11:30 she informed me that the flower seed aka sunflower seed, was stuck in her throat. I really didn't think to much about it at the time. Over the course of the day she complained about it and I was just kinda thinking it would go away! While we were eating dinner she just kept saying it hurt so Warren and I got a flashlight and looked and sure enough there was a piece of the shell poked in between her tonsil and her uvula(sp...hangie bal thing). But the only time you could see the shell is when would say ahhhhh and then when she stopeed saying it, it would go back in. We ended up calling the Dr on call around 7. He called back and we explained what was going on and he told us to bring her to the ER and let them try and get it out. We brought her and they couldn't get it so the Dr called and ENT to see what he thought. Dr came back in and said that she needed to go to Dr W at 1:15 the next day and if they couldn't get it, she would have to be sedated. He also told us that this being in her throat was not going to harm her it was just in a spot that it was not gonna get pushed down by food or come out on it's on and it was rubbing an ulcer in her throat. So we go to the ENT the next day and at first Maggie is very cooperative. After she feels the tool touch her throat she freaks and he can't get it. He then brings up sedation but wants that to be a last resort. Dr then tells us that he doesn't think he will be able to get it if we hold her down...but he wants to try anyway(he didn't think holding her down would work because she had to move her palate a certain way in order for the shell to be exposed). So...Warren, myself, and a nurse held her down and low and behold he got it! All I could think was THANK GOODNESS! I hated to hold her down but did not want her to have be sedated. So $120 later, the shell is out! And you better believe that she is NOT allowed to have sunflower seeds anymore!
